Choosing the right line type

Longevity vs Drag

With any line type there is a correlation between strength, longevity and drag. There is a trade-off between strength and drag. The thicker Vectran 750 will induce more wind resistance, but will be stronger and will last longer than Vectran 550.

As wing loading increases the effect of drag caused by lines becomes more noticeable. Thinner line will induce less drag which is beneficial for high performance wings, however the trade-off will be longevity and require more frequent relines and regular inspections.

Reduced drag can be taken to extremes by competition pilots using line sets made from Vectran 300 or even 200 lb line. These lines are very much on the limits, careful attention should be paid to jump numbers especially if being used terminal.

Longevity vs Pack Volume

In containers where pack volume is tight, the option for slightly thinner lines may outweigh a preference for longevity. In which case dropping down a line size to say V550 will decrease over all pack volume, but be aware you will generally need to change the lineset more often.

Vectran

Vectran is our preferred and most commonly used linetype, standard on all our canopies but the Matrix2. It is a very strong line and doesn’t stretch or shrink easily, so it holds its trim well. It wears more easily than Spectra, especially in hot, dry or desert-like environments.

HMA

High Modulus Aramid (HMA), also known as Technora, is a very strong, small diameter line with characteristics similar to Vectran. More commonly found on our higher performance cross-brace canopies.

Due to its susceptibility to abrasion especially in hot, dry or sandy environments and consequently it’s low lifespan, we only recommend HMA 600 for use on our sport canopies. It’s also harder to estimate the extent of wear on HMA compared to vectran so should be examined often and thoroughly by a rigger. HMA has a big trade off that can sometimes mean replacing the lines well before any other type.

Dacron

Dacron is more elastic than other lines, providing more shock absorption for fast openings. It comes standard on our Matrix2 CRW canopies, and we offer it as an option for Tandems and Omegas. Dacron is a thick, heavy line and adds considerable bulk to pack volume.

Spectra

Spectra is the toughest of all the line types it’s strong and lasts the longest. However, it will shrink due to the heat generated by the slider descending down the lines on opening – so the line may look good, but after a few hundred jumps it will have shrunk unevenly, affecting how your canopy flies and opens. This is especially apparent with more responsive wings at higher wing loadings. Because of this propensity to shrink, we don’t recommend Spectra, but we do still offer it as an option on Tandems, Omegas, Safire 3s and Icarus Students for people who are still fond of it.

NZA Line Types

The line types we offer at NZ Aerosports are:

The number beside the line type indicates the breaking strength of the line in Lbs. The higher the number, the stronger and thicker the line.

Checking lines for wear

When should you check your lines?
Lines should be checked every 25 jumps – even less for thinner lines, 15-20 jumps max.

How should you check your lines?
Check lines for abrasion/fuzzyness. Brake lines wear faster than suspension lines generally.

Pay close attention to connector link end loops (the ones that go on your slinks). Wear can occur on the inside of the loops so make sure to get in and have a good look. Outer most loops tend to wear the hardest.

 

When is it time for a reline?

It is worth keeping in mind a line from a worn lineset can break at any time during the opening or flight of your canopy so don’t assume if it made it through the opening it can’t break during your final turn in to land. They can and they do, particularly on high performance canopies where the additional centrifugal forces during a turn load the lines up.

Don’t just ignore your lines for the first couple of hundred jumps “because they’re new!” Lines, especially small diameter HMA and Vectran, are harshly affected by environmental conditions. Sand, salt and dust can speed up the wear considerably, to the point that we occasional hear of line sets that have had to be replaced after just 200 or 300 jumps.

Try to develop the habit of giving your lines a quick once-over every time you pack, or if you use a packer you can spend a few seconds checking them while you’re walking back from the landing area. After all, you are usually carrying your lines in your hand anyway.If you aren’t sure, ask someone who understands line wear and how to check the canopy trim. It takes less time than the average pack job and could save your life.

Most line wear on a canopy is caused by both handling when stowing -packing, un-stowing during opening, and by friction from the slider. As the outside and centre lines have more contact with the slider during opening and flight, they tend to suffer more wear and tear than the rest of the line set. Therefore the areas to pay the most attention to when inspecting your lines, are the points where the slider spends the most time while in use.

Even if you always pull your slider down your risers it will spend some time every jump flapping about right on top of the links. People using hard links should also be using slider bumpers but it still pays to push the bumpers down and check the lines just above the connector links for wear or damage to the line loops.

This problem with wear can also occurs with soft links. In general the chance of excessive wear to the area where the softlink goes through the line loop is more pronounced when using HMA or small diameter Vectran simply because slider bumpers are rarely used.

On a regular basis we see line sets that at first glance look like they’re in great condition, but the outside lines on the softlinks have been nearly worn through by the slider grommets. A similar thing can happen to the lines up at the canopy. Snivelling, slow opening canopies can show wear up by the slider stops. So keep an eye on these areas also.

As for the rest of the line set, when the slightly fuzzy look starts to become a slightly frayed look, it’s time to reline. The fuzzy look occurs when the very fine microfibres that make up the strands start to break, this is fine… up to a point. Since there are only 12 strands that make up a line and carry the the load, a broken strand is a bad thing, especially on small diameter line which doesn’t have much reserve strength to begin with.

If you are using an RDS on a regular basis, it pays to be extra vigilant. RDS rings cause rapid wear and we recommend checking your lines twice as often no matter how many jumps on the line set.

When it comes to your lines, regular checks are key, as is taking care not to walk on them, drag them about the ground or slam them in the door of your car when you chuck it in the back seat unpacked at the end of the day. Respect your lines, they are part of the life saving equipment you have spent all your hard earned beer tokens on.
